History of World Railways

From Ancient Tracks to the Modern Era

When classifying the history of railway origin in the world chronologically, we embark on a journey spanning thousands of years. Starting from Ancient Greece and stretching to the Industrial Revolution, this path led to the formation of the modern railway, one of the greatest inventions in transportation history.

1. The Most Ancient Tracks: "Diolkos"

6th Century BC (approx. 600 BC)

Ancient Greece - Isthmus of Corinth

The "ancestor" of the modern railway existed in Ancient Greece. Around 600 BC, a paved trackway called the "Diolkos" was used to transport ships overland across the Isthmus of Corinth.

⚙️ Technical features:

  • The stone path had special grooves (rails)
  • Wheeled platforms were pulled by slaves or animals
  • Used to transport ships between two seas

2. Industrial Rails

The foundation of modern railways was laid in the coal mines of Europe.

1550s

🇩🇪 Germany - Mining Tracks

In Germany, wooden rails began to be used in mines to transport coal (often called "vagonways").

1760s

🇬🇧 England - Iron Enhancements

In England, iron plates were added on top of wooden rails, which significantly extended their lifespan.

3. The First Steam Locomotive

⚡ The Railway REVOLUTION

It all began when the steam engine was put onto rails!

1804 - February 21

Richard Trevithick - The First Locomotive

English engineer Richard Trevithick tested the world's first steam locomotive to run on rails in Wales.

📊 Technical highlights:

Load: 10 tons of iron
Wagons: 5 wagons
Passengers: 70 people
Distance: 16 km (10 miles)

⚠️ The Challenge: The locomotive was too heavy for the cast-iron rails of the time, causing them to break, and it did not achieve widespread use.

4. The First Public Railway

🎯 KEY DATE!

Most historians consider this year to be the official birth date of the modern railway.

September 27, 1825

Stockton and Darlington Railway

📍 Location:

Great Britain

👨‍🔬 Creator:

George Stephenson

🚂 "Locomotion No. 1"

This locomotive pulled the world's first public railway line. It was designed to carry both coal and passengers.

ℹ️ Note: Although passenger carriages were initially pulled by horses while steam was used for freight, this line is recognized as the foundation of modern rail.

5. First Intercity and Fully Steam Railway

The true modern railway—operating exclusively with locomotives (no horse-traction) and running on a fixed schedule—began in 1830.

1830

Liverpool and Manchester Railway

This was the first railway to use only steam locomotives, connect two major cities, and operate with a precise timetable.

🚀 Famous Locomotive:

Stephenson's legendary "Rocket" locomotive was the standout performer here.
